Meet Janell Bettinger

Health and Human Performance

Janell Bettinger

HOMETOWN: Grants Pass, Oregon
MAJOR: Recreation Management
FAVORITE THING ABOUT BYU: Opportunity to apply the gospel to my area of study
ANIMAL SHE'D LIKE TO BE: Eagle

Janell Bettinger left for her mission to Toronto, Canada, thinking that she had found her niche. She'd be an English major. Mention Jane Austin and she'll tell you how much she loves Pride and Prejudice. Janell has a passion for reading and a flair for languages. She can keep a conversation going in Spanish and does even better in German. But perhaps, not surprisingly, by the time she got home from her mission, she had changed her mind. And living in and backpacking across Europe for more than a year—immersed in the outdoor beauty of the continent with its kaleidoscope of peoples and cultures—only served to reinforce her decision.

"I just really enjoy traveling. I'm able to go out and meet people and see different cultures. I still love to read, I just didn't know if I wanted to study English for the rest of my life. I love to help people, but I like to work outside. When I discovered therapeutic recreation, it sounded perfect, so I chose it."

From Janell's point of view, her choice couldn't have been better. She's already had valuable therapy experiences. "I was able to work at a group home—for girls, troubled youth—and teach them some different ways to use their leisure time," she says.

On another occasion, Janell joined a BYU Pioneer Trek. "We were doing research on families. We got to hike and camp with the families, about 90 people, working with them and observing the family dynamics." She also enjoyed her involvement with the relatively new Conservation Outdoor Leadership Training program (COLT), based at Aspen Grove, BYU's own family resort in the nearby mountains.

At this point Janell looks to be heading for a master's degree in public or recreation administration. And with her backpack handy, she's always ready to hit the trail.
