Meet Lisa Chan

Marriott School of Management

Lisa Chan

HOMETOWN: Kent, Washington
MAJOR: Business Management: Information Systems
RECENT ADVENTURE: Skydiving
FAVORITE CLASS: Brother Bott's Religion C130 (Sharing the Gospel)

"At first, it was hard to get my balance." Admitting she's not very good at snowboarding, Lisa Chan quickly adds, "But the last time I went, I made a lot of progress, so I'm really pumped about going again." True to a form that meets challenge with excellence, she'll soon be zipping down a steep slope.

Lisa gets much of her spiritual balance from strong connections with her family and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Her father left China for America, joined the Church, returned to Hong Kong to marry, then moved with his wife to the United States without money, friends, or family. Lisa, like her father, seriously considers her options. then lets faith replace any fear about her decisions.

Full Chinese, Lisa has travelled throughout Asia with her family as an exchange student and as a student. While she has one foot in the modern world of technology, she has the other firmly planted in the traditions of her heritage, enjoying China's history and culture and speaking Cantonese with her extended family.

"Part of my heritage," Lisa says, "is living up to my potential and not doing anything less than I can do. Asians are stereotyped as being driven to be their best for the family. The family name is very important in Asian culture. Maybe that's not a bad thing to live up to." Excelling in academics and in violin (she played in a national youth orchestra at Carnegie Hall), Lisa looked into several Ivy League schools before deciding to come to BYU.

"When I asked myself, 'What kind of place do I need to be at?' I just knew I needed to be here at BYU because of the educational, social, and, most important, spiritual environment," Lisa says. "In every class you go to, you're not just concentrating on that specific course, you're learning in an eternal sense." Looking to the future, she says, "It's exciting to me to think about going out into the world and being a good example to others of someone who has integrity and someone who's honest. That's my most important career goal."
