Minor in Ballroom Dance (15 hours*)



This is a limited-enrollment program requiring departmental admissions approval. Please see below for information regarding requirements for admission to this minor.

Program Requirements

  1. Before being accepted into the minor, a student must complete the following with a grade of B– or better:
      DANCE 284
      DANCE 284

                  : Ballroom Dance, International Standard, Technique 1.

      DANCE 285
      DANCE 285

                  : Ballroom Dance, International Latin, Technique 1.

  2. At least 10 hours must be completed at BYU.

  3. Complete the following core courses:
      DANCE 260 : Introduction to Dance. (3:3:0)(Credit Hours:Lecture Hours:Lab Hours)
      DANCE 260 : Introduction to Dance. (3:3:0)(Credit Hours:Lecture Hours:Lab Hours)
      OFFERED: F, W; Honors also.
      DESCRIPTION: Critical analysis of dance as a cultural and expressive art form, studied through lecture, reading, research, multimedia presentations, and practical movement experiences.
      NOTE: No previous dance experience required.

                  : Ballroom Dance, International Standard, Technique 1.

  4. Complete one course from the following:

                  : Methods of Teaching Social Dance.

      DANCE 486
      DANCE 486

                  : Theory and Notation of Ballroom Dance, International Standard.

      DANCE 487
      DANCE 487

                  : Theory and Notation of Ballroom Dance, International Latin.

  5. Complete five hours from the following:

                   : Social Dance, Advanced.

      DANCE 382R

                   : Ballroom Dance, International Standard, Technique 2.

      DANCE 383R
      DANCE 383R

                   : Ballroom Dance, International Latin, Technique 2.

                   : Ballroom Dance, International Standard, Technique 3.

      DANCE 385R
      DANCE 385R

                   : Ballroom Dance, International Latin, Technique 3.

                   : Ballroom Dance, International Standard, Technique 4.

      Note: No more than two hours may be completed from each of the listed R technique courses.

  6. Complete two hours from the following:

                   : Ballroom Dance Performance, Intermediate.

      DANCE 488R

                   : Ballroom Dance Performance Company.

*Hours include courses that may fulfill university core requirements.
