Certificate of Language Proficiency in Spanish (9 hours)

Any full-time BYU student who meets the proficiency and course requirements may earn the Certificate in Language Proficiency. The proficiency requirement is met through the nationally recognized ACTFL Oral and Writing Proficiency Exams. Qualifying students will be awarded a certificate on one of three levels:

  1. Advanced Certificate: ACTFL Oral/Writing average score of at least "Advanced Mid" and 9 hours of course work at the B level.
  2. Mastery Certificate: ACTFL Oral/Writing average score of at least "Advanced High" and 9 hours of course work at the B level.
  3. Professional Certificate: ACTFL Oral/Writing average score of at least "Superior" and 9 hours of course work at the B level.

Students are responsible for all fees requred to sit for the ACTFL exams (approximately $200) which may be taken only at those times specified by ACTFL testers. Students may pay for repeat ACTFL tests as often as they would like in order to earn a higher certification.

Required Courses:
  1. Language - complete one course from the following:
      SPAN 321 : Third-Year Spanish Reading, Grammar, and Culture. (3:3:0)(Credit Hours:Lecture Hours:Lab Hours)

      WHEN TAUGHT:Fall; Winter; Spring; Summer
      PREREQUISITE: Span 206 or equivalent.
      DESCRIPTION: Intensive study and practice with Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and writings incorporating cultural and literary readings.
      NOTE: First class for returned Spanish-speaking missionaries. Fullfills the University Core Languages of Learning requirement. Required for Spanish major and minor.

      SPAN 326 : Spanish Phonetics and Pronunciation. (3:3:0)(Credit Hours:Lecture Hours:Lab Hours)
      SPAN 326 : Spanish Phonetics and Pronunciation. (3:3:0)(Credit Hours:Lecture Hours:Lab Hours)
      PREREQUISITE: Span 202, 301; or equivalents.
      DESCRIPTION: Spanish sound system; underlying concepts of Spanish speech production and applications to pronunciation.

Students who successfully complete a certificate will receive an official document verifying their level of achievement. The certificate will be listed on the university transcript.
