Admission to Degree Program

Admission to the facility and property management preprofessional program is open to all BYU students, who may then apply for the professional program. After completing required prerequisite courses, candidates should send an application to the professional program, along with a letter indicating what skills they have that would make them a successful facility manager; a description of the candidate's leadership experience; and a resumé. Applicants will be evaluated based on GPA, skills, leadership, and work experience.

Program application deadlines are April 1, August 1, and December 1.

The Discipline

Facility and property management (FPM) is the development and management of all types of real estate, facilities, and properties from original design ideas through consruction to the different phases of occupation, including remodeling, to the final demise of the property. FPM is a cradle-to-grave stewardship to manage the real estate to fulfill the purpose for which it is intended.

This program prepares students to be part of the administrative/supervisory team in the increasingly complex world of facilities and property management. The facilities and property manager combines leadership, financial, and technical knowledge in fourteen areas: space planning and programming; construction project management; building systems and infrastructure; operations and maintenance; energy management; sustainability and environmental responsibility; safety, security, and disaster recovery; standards; laws and regulatory compliance; leadership and administration; finance and funding; real estate; property management; event marketing and management; and process technologies.

Career Opportunities

The program has nearly 100 percent job placement within the field of facilities and property management. Employment can be found in education, government, health care, sports and entertainment, real estate brokerage and property management, and all types of general businesss.

Responsibilities encompass management of planning, funding, construction, renovation, and maintenance of buildings, grounds, and infrastructure. The program is broad based and prepares managers for all types of facilities and property management, with salaries among the upper-level of university graduates.

Further educational opportunities include advanced degrees in facility and property management, real estate, business administration, public administration, or other related fields.
