Certificate of Language Proficiency in Japanese (9 hours)

This language certificate program is administered by The Center for Language Studies (3086 JFSB), http://languagecertificate.byu.edu.

Any matriculated (degree-seeking) BYU student who meets the proficiency and course requirements may earn the Certificate of Language Proficiency (Language Certificate). The proficiency requirement is met through the nationally recognized ACTFL Oral and Writing Proficiency Exams. Qualifying students will be awarded a certificate on one of three levels:

1. Advanced Certificate: An ACTFL "Advanced" rating on at least one of the two proficiency exams and 9 hours of coursework with a minimum of a B- grade in each of the three courses.
2. Mastery Certificate: An ACTFL "Advanced High" rating on at least one of the two proficiency exams and 9 hours of coursework with a minimum of a B- grade in each of the three courses.
3. Professional Certificate: An ACTFL "Superior" rating on at least one of the two proficiency exams and 9 hours of coursework with a minimum of a B- grade in each of the three courses.

At this time the cost of the ACTFL exams will be paid by BYU.
