Back Academic Standards

  

Your academic standing in the university is determined according to the grades that you earn. The following outline shows the conditions and expectations according to a student's academic standing.

Academic Status Under These Conditions Expectations
SATISFACTORY
STANDING 		Occurs when your most recent semester/term GPA and your BYU cumulative GPA are 2.0 or above. Continue to maintain a BYU cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher until graduation.
PREVIOUS Same as satisfactory status but used to indicate those students who have been on Probation or Suspension in the past. Same as satisfactory status. Students on previous status will go directly to probation if in the future they have a semester below 2.0.
WARNING Occurs when your most recent semester/term GPA falls below 2.0. Contact the Academic Support Office (2500 SWKT) for assistance.
WARNING with
REGISTRATION BLOCK 		Occurs when your BYU cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 and you have completed more than one semester/term at BYU
OR
Occurs when your semester/term GPA falls below 1.0. 		Contact the Academic Support Office (2500 SWKT) to review your academic status. You will not be allowed to register for future semesters/terms until you have obtained clearance through the Academic Support Office.
PROBATION with
REGISTRATION BLOCK 		Occurs when you are on warning status and your next semester/term GPA falls below 2.0
OR
Occurs if at any previous time you have been on probation or suspension status at BYU and your semester/term GPA again falls below 2.0
OR
Occurs if your semester/term GPA is 2.0 or above and your BYU cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 and you have been moved to probation status. 		Contact the Academic Support Office (2500 SWKT) to review your academic status. You will not be allowed to register for future semesters/terms until you have obtained clearance through the Academic Support Office.

Note: If you are receiving university or federal financial aid, you must also contact the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB). Students on probation usually are not eligible for financial aid.
SUSPENSION Occurs when you are on probation status and your next semester/term GPA falls below 2.0
OR
Occurs when you fail to comply with the conditions prescribed by the Academic Support Office.
  1. Suspended students are denied continued enrollment. If you are suspended and desire to return to BYU at some future point, you must qualify for readmission. If you wish to appeal your suspension, you must contact the Academic Support Office (2500 SWKT).
  2. If you have preregistered and/or paid any fees for a subsequent semester or term, you must withdraw (discontinue) and arrange for a tuition refund. Contact the Academic Support Office (2500 SWKT) for assistance.
  3. Suspension will be noted on your official BYU transcript.
DISMISSAL Occurs when you are suspended a second time from the university. Academic dismissal is noted on your official BYU transcript. You will need to seek other options to continue formal education.

Note: Registration blocks may also be set by college advisement centers on students not progressing toward graduation in timely ways. In such cases, students must also meet with their college advisement center to have this block removed.
