Admission to Degree Program

The degree program in the Department of Biology carries special enrollment limitations. Please see the college advisement center for specific details.

The Discipline

BYU's College of Biology and Agriculture offers programs leading to the BS degree in biology from BYU and a DDS/DMD (dentistry), OD (optometry), DPM (podiatry), or DC (chiropractic) from cooperating professional schools. Interested freshmen (not available to transferring students or upperclassmen) declare the combined degree as their major and spend three years at BYU completing all BYU general education and required degree course work. After all BYU requirements are fulfilled, these students attend dental, optometry, podiatry, or chiropractic school for four years. The first year of course work at the professional school is transferred back to BYU, and the BS degree in biology is granted. Should a student not be accepted to a professional school, no biology degree will be awarded. Other four-year degree options would then be available.

Career Opportunities

Dentistry, optometry, podiatry, or chiropractic are careers available upon completion of this degree program.

Graduation Requirements

To receive a bachelor's degree a student must fill three groups of requirements: (1) general education requirements, (2) university requirements, and (3) major requirements.

Students should contact their college advisement center for information about general education courses that will also fill major requirements.

BS Biology (combined degree program) (52-55 hours*)

Major Requirements

1. Students with required GPA and DAT, OAT, or MCAT scores may obtain admission to specified dental, optometry, podiatry, or chiropractic schools after three years of preprofessional education at BYU. After completion of the first year of dental, optometry, podiatry, or chiropractic school, these students will receive a bachelor's degree in biology from BYU. Details are available in 380 WIDB.

2. Please go to the college advisement center and fill out a required contract when you declare this major.

3. Complete the following:
   Biol 130, 371, 372.
   Botny 373, 374; or Zool 373, 374.
   Zool 204, 350, 380.

   Complete the following:

   Chem 105, 106, 107, 351, 352, 353 (2 hours).

   Complete the following (Physics not on DAT):

   Phscs 105, 106, 107, 108.

   Complete an interview with your preprofessional committee.

   Predental students complete the following:

   Math 110 (or equivalent).

   Zool 229, 329, 429.

   Take DAT and apply through AADSAS.

   Preoptometry students complete the following:

   Math 110 (or equivalent); 112 or 119.

   Zool 227.

   Take OAT and apply to schools.

   Prepodiatry and prechiropractic students complete the following:

   Math 110 (or equivalent).

   Zool 339.

   Take MCAT and apply through AACPMAS (podiatry only).

   Apply for graduation and be sure all general education requirements are completed before leaving BYU.

*Hours include courses that may fulfill GE or university requirements.
