Admission to Degree Program

Students must apply to the Counseling Psychology and Special Education Department for admission to the certification programs and/or the minor in secondary education. Applications may be obtained from the department office in 328 MCKB and will be due on December 1.

General Information—Certification Programs

Teacher Education Major Dual Certification

Teacher education majors in elementary and secondary education may complete special education certification requirements and be dually certificated in their major and special education.

Non-Education Major Special Education Certification

Non-teacher education majors may take courses to certify in special education while earning their bachelor's degree. However, they must complete the degree before applying for certification.



Minor Special Education (25–29 hours)

  1. Students must be admitted to a secondary education major and the special education minor. See the secretary in 328 MCKB for application information for the minor.

  2. Complete the following prerequisite courses:
    CPSE 400
    IP&T 301
    ScEd 276R.

  3. Complete the following courses:
    CPSE 503, 510, 526, 532, 533R, 534, 536, 537R.

  4. Complete 3–8 hours of the following, depending on whether or not secondary student teaching is completed:
    CPSE 586R, 599R.
