The Discipline

This minor program will educate students so they can:

  1. Use computers to create, organize, manipulate, and communicate information in ways that will enhance their life's work.
  2. Talk to and work with the computing professionals who support and develop their information tools.

The program is administered jointly by the following colleges and departments:

College of Biology and Agriculture
College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences
College of Fine Arts and Communications
College of Humanities
College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences
School of Accountancy and Information Systems



Minor Computing and Information (18 hours)

This is a limited-enrollment program requiring admissions approval. Please see the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Advisement Center for information regarding requirements for admission to this minor.

Minor Requirements

  1. Complete the following prerequisite course:
    CpIn-CS 100.

  2. Complete one course from the following:
    CpIn 210, 220.

  3. Complete two courses from the following:
    CpIn 210, 220, 230, 240, 250.

    Note: CpIn 210 and 220 will not double count.

  4. Complete two elective courses (6 hours). A list of approved elective courses may be obtained in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Advisement Center.

Computing, information structures, programming principles, Internet, World Wide Web, text, spreadsheets, data representations for images, sound and video. For nonmajors.

210. Visual Environments for Programming. (3:3:0) Prerequisite: CS-CpIn 100.

Programming visual user interfaces, designing applications, scripting languages; visual interaction design principles, including color fonts and layout.

220. Procedural Programming. (3:3:0) Prerequisite: CS-CpIn 100.

Object-oriented program design and development. Principles of algorithm formulation and implementation.

230. Introduction to Multimedia. (3:3:0) Prerequisite: CS-CpIn 100.

Technical skills in creating digital multimedia, including images, audio, video, and animation. Storytelling, aesthetics, and visual design. Web site creation.

240. Database Design and Access. (3:3:0) Prerequisite: CS-CpIn 100.

Modeling information. Relational databases and SQL. Query formulation and application development using databases. Data transaction management.

250. Networked Communications. (3:3:0) Prerequisite: CS-CpIn 100.

Data communications on intranets and the Internet. Designing and operating networks. Understanding networking protocols, including telephone, Internet, and wireless.

Students pursue projects that enhance their computing and information skills.
