The U.S. Department of Education awards federal Pell Grants based on
financial need. They are not loans and do not need to be repaid.
Eligibility
In addition to the general federal requirements in the section on federal
aid, you must:
- Be admitted as an undergraduate to a BYU degree-seeking
program for a current or future enrollment period
during the academic year.
- Not already have a baccalaureate degree. (If
you pay graduate tuition, you are not eligible).
Payments
If you qualify for a federal Pell Grant, we will post your annual award
information on VIP under Awards. The actual amount you receive will
depend on the number of hours you take each enrollment, as follows:
| Credit Hours |
Payment |
 |
12 or more semester hours |
Full-time payment |
9-11.5 semester hours |
Three-quarter-time payment |
6- 8.5 semester hours |
Half-time payment |
Fewer than 6 semester hours |
Less than half-time payment |
Second Block Hours
You must register for all hours, including second block classes, by
the last day to add classes that semester for them to count for your
federal Pell Grant payment. If you add second block classes after this
date, they will not count toward your total enrollment for federal Pell
Grant purposes.
Spring/Summer Federal Pell Grant Payments
If you receive a full-time federal Pell Grant payment for both fall
and winter semesters, there will be no federal Pell Grant money left
for spring and/or summer terms. If you are paid for less than 12 hours
for fall or winter semester, part of your annual award may still be
available for spring and/or summer terms.
Computing Hours
Hours through Continuing Education, the BYU Salt Lake Center , other
off-campus centers, Study Abroad, or the Jerusalem Center may be used
if you are admitted to a BYU degree-seeking program for a current or
future term or semester during the 2006-2007 academic year.
Audit hours, noncredit courses, challenge credit, and hours through Conferences
and Workshops generally cannot be counted.
Independent Study
Before you purchase any bachelor of general studies (BGS) or Independent
Study courses, you must visit with your financial aid counselor if you
want financial aid to help pay for them.
Transfer Students
If you have already received your full annual federal Pell
Grant from another institution, you are not eligible for any payment
at BYU. If you receive a partial payment at another school, your grant
at BYU will be reduced proportionately.
