PLUS Loans

The federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) is a loan that a parent may obtain on behalf of a dependent undergraduate student.

Eligibility

In addition to the requirements in the Federal Financial Aid section, you must:

  • Be enrolled at least half-time (6 hours per semester/ 3 hours per term) during the entire period of your loan. These hours cannot include audit hours, noncredit courses, challenge credit, or independent study.
  • Have your parent's credit history checked by the lender.
  • Determine your loan eligibility and be awarded before your last day of eligible enrollment.

Payments and Limits

  • Payments by the parent begin 60 days after the final disbursement of the loan.
  • Your parent may obtain a PLUS in addition to other student loans you may receive.
  • Total financial aid cannot exceed the cost of your education.
  • Checks made copayable to both the parent and the school will be mailed to the school, where eligibility will be confirmed and the checks forwarded to the parent.
