BYU Scholarship Deferment
To defer your BYU scholarship and your admission to BYU, complete the Online Missionary Enrollment and To defer your BYU scholarship and your admission to BYU, complete the Online Missionary Enrollment and Scholarship Deferment, available at https://y.byu.edu/ry/ae/prod/ces/cgi/missionDefer.cgi. You must be in the MTC by the last day of the semester you wish to defer. The balance of your scholarship will be available beginning the semester you return to BYU. You must return for the semester or term indicated on the missionary deferment form. If your scholarship is awarded as a percentage of tuition, the value will be increased in proportion to the cost of tuition when you return. Deferred scholarships remain on the major fall and winter semesters unless you request otherwise. (For additional conditions for deferring your admission, visit the Admissions website at http://saas.byu.edu/tools/b4byu/sites/b4/?new-freshman/missionary-deferments/).
National Merit scholarships may be deferred by completing the Online Missionary Enrollment and Scholarship Deferment as well as completing a deferment form that is required by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Please contact them directly to have the deferment form mailed to you. Keep in mind that National Merit will only defer one year at a time, so your family will need to complete a second set of forms half way through your mission.
To defer non-BYU scholarships, you will need to contact the sponsoring organization regarding their policies.
Applying for scholarships while on a mission:
Students enrolled for winter semester may apply for scholarships for the next academic year. If awarded, they can defer the scholarship until they return from their mission. Those leaving after fall semester will be considered for scholarships upon their return to BYU. We will automatically consider returning missionaries (except for transfer students) for academic scholarships for the semester or term they return to school. If you want to be considered for other scholarships when you return (need-based, private, etc.), you will need to complete the online scholarship application by the appropriate deadline . In some cases this may be during the time you are still serving your mission.
For missionary parents (scholarships)
The scholarship application is available in myBYU; you must have your son's or daughter's Net ID and password if you want to access this for them. You can go back and edit the fields up until the scholarship deadline. You are welcome to enter demographic and financial information for your missionary, but your son or daughter must write the essays. Applications must be completed by the appropriate deadline.
