Step 2: Financial Opportunities and Options

Off-Campus Scholarships

What is it?

An off-campus scholarship is simply a scholarship you receive from a granting organization other than BYU. Generally these funds will be sent to BYU rather than directly to you.

Who is eligible?

Any enrolled student to whom the off-campus organization wishes to award the scholarship, and who complies with the terms and conditions of the scholarship.

How do I apply?

This will vary, depending on the organization awarding the scholarship.

When are the deadlines, and when will I know if I am a recipient?

This will vary, depending on the organization awarding the scholarship.

To see your current and past awards (scholarship history), visit the SCHOLAR page on myBYU.

How much money can I get?

Generally, as much as they want to give you! However, please be aware that some exceptions may include athletes under NCAA regulations and students receiving Federal Stafford Loans. Some limitations may apply to these students.

How and when will I get the money?

The scholarship granting organization will generally send the money directly to BYU. This is how they verify that you are, in fact, an enrolled student. If you have been awarded a scholarship from another organization that you would like to use at BYU, have it sent to:

BYU Financial Aid Office
A-41 ASB
Provo, UT 84602

Twelve credit hours per semester are required for all off-campus scholarships unless the granting organization specifies otherwise in the correspondence they send to BYU along with your check. If you would like to request a reduction in the hour requirement, you must make that request of the granting organization. If your request is approved, written authorization from the granting organization must be emailed to scholarshipprocessing@byu.edu.

About 3–5 days after your funds arrive at BYU, and if you have registered for the minimum credit hours required, your scholarship will credit toward your tuition charges. If money from scholarships and other aid exceeds tuition and fees, Student Financial Services will refund excess monies. Generally, the refund process begins approximately three days after the first day of classes. Excess funds will be sent to your bank account if you authorize direct deposit. If you do not authorize direct deposit, any excess funds will be mailed to the mailing address you have listed on myBYU. This may delay your receipt of funds.

If your scholarship funds do not appear in your student account check first with the granting organization to find out when they were sent. If enough time has elapsed for the check to arrive at BYU and to afford 3–5 days for processing, you may call 801-422-4104 to request that we look into the situation.

Independent Study: You are welcome to use your non-BYU scholarship for Independent Study courses if you have approval from the scholarship granting organization. To transfer funds to Independent Study, we must have a written statement of approval from your donor and a letter from you listing the courses you wish to take. Please note that we can only accept the amount for your course(s) and materials. Any funds in excess of your course fees and materials will be returned to the granting organization.

Military Tuition Assistance*: Contact your unit for a "Request for Tuition Assistance" form. Once the forms are completed, submit them to our office. If you change your registration at any point during the semester, you will need to submit a corrected tuition assistance form from your unit.

*We have recently been informed that in order to continue to participate in Military Tuition Assistance, the university must acquiesce to certain stipulations contained in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) commissioned by the Department of Defense. The current MOU contains specific requirements that are unreasonable for the university. We are currently in negotiations with the Department of Defense, trying to find a resolution to these issues. However, if we are unable to come to an acceptable agreement and sign the MOU by January 1, 2012, access to Military TA at BYU, for all branches of the Armed Forces, will be effectively terminated.

This does not affect GI Bill educational benefits for which students may be eligible, nor does it make any changes to BYU’s existing ROTC benefits programs.

Vocational Rehabilitation: Your rehabilitation counselor should mail or fax us an authorization form to pay your tuition and any other charges they cover. If your textbooks are covered, your counselor must send a separate authorization form to the Bookstore Customer Accounts Office, 3978 WSC. They can be reached by phone at 801-422-2470.
