Admissions

What is a Former Student?

A former student can be classified in two ways: those who have taken additional credit at another college or university and those who have not.

The following bullets outline the qualifications for former students:

  • Girls studying on steps
Some former students have taken additional credit while others have not.
Former students without additional transfer credit, who leave in Good, Warning, Probation, or Suspension status, are allowed to return for any entry date IF they meet the application deadline and have at least a 2.0 GPA when leaving the university. (See bullets below for more information regarding suspensions.)
  • Former students with additional transfer credits must have earned a 3.0 cumulative GPA on the transfer work to be re-admissible. Students must fill out Parts 1, 2, and 3 of the application and provide appropriate transcripts to be considered.
  • Former students coming in with more than 90 hours and intend to change their major must obtain clearance from the new department.
  • Former students, who have not had previous Day Continuing eligibility because they attended a Study Abroad, Continuing Education program, or the Visiting Student program are considered transfer students.
  • Suspended students who have been out of BYU for 12 months or more may reapply for any entrance date IF they meet the application deadline. Any college-level work completed while on suspension must be at a 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Suspended students cannot attend the Spring/Summer Visiting Student Program or Evening School.

BYU students who want to defer their enrollment and scholarship (if applicable) for one major semester (fall or winter) without reapplying must complete a Continuing Student Deferment form.

Students who interrupt their studies without processing a deferment form must reapply for admission by completing Parts 1, 2, and 3 of the application.

Application

*The entire CES application (including parts 1, 2, and 3) can be found at BeSmart.com.

Transcripts

Official transcripts from each school attended since the student's last enrollment at BYU must be provided and identified. Students will be evaluated for readmission based on their post-BYU transfer GPA and their BYU academic standing. To be competitive for admission, a student must have a 3.0 GPA on their transfer work since leaving BYU.

Transfer classes will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis. The course must be substantially equivalent to a BYU course, with a grade of C- or higher, to apply toward appropriate university or major graduation requirements.

Clearance

All holds (such as financial or Honor Code) placed on the student's record by BYU must be cleared before the deadline for the application to be considered. Additionally, the student must reimburse BYU for any incurred fees to collect the student's past debts.
