BYU International Student Guide

The Mission of Brigham Young University

Brigham Young Statue
The statue of Brigham Young stands in front of the Abraham Smoot Administration Building.

Brigham Young once said, "Education is the power to think clearly, the power to act well in the world's work, and the power to appreciate life." The mission of Brigham Young University is to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life. A BYU education should be

  • spiritually strengthening
  • intellectually enlarging, and
  • character building, leading to
  • lifelong learning and service.

These BYU aims provide a more complete, even eternal perspective for students, one that begins with a spiritual knowledge and end with knowledge applied to the practical tasks of living and serving. Taken together, these aims aspire to promote an education that helps students integrate all parts of their university experience into a fundamentally sacred way of life--their faith and reasoning, their knowledge and conduct, their public lives and private convictions.

Here you will find answers to the most commonly asked questions of students interested in attending BYU. We hope you take time to browse through the different links provided and research what it means to get an education at Brigham Young University!

Deposit Requirements for New International Students Starting Summer/Fall 2010

In order for students to be successful academically at BYU, they must have a solid financial plan. All international applicants for undergraduate degrees are required to deposit $4,000 in an escrow account at BYU immediately following notification of their admission and prior to the initiation of any student visa paperwork.

The deposits will be held in escrow with the intent that it will be released to the students during their final semester before graduation. Students who experience unforeseen financial hardship while studying at BYU may petition to use up to $3,000 of their deposit before their final semester.

International students who find they are unable to cover the costs associated with their continued education at BYU and who have already accessed $3,000 from their deposit will receive the final $1,000 in the form of a plane ticket to return to their home country.
