Deferments

How Do I Defer?

Karl G. Maeser
Student deferment is for one semester only.

To defer enrollment and scholarship (if applicable) for one semester without reapplying, you must

  • Be a daytime student during the semester prior to requesting the deferment

  • Be admissible to the university

  • Submit the deferment form before the application deadline of the semester you are wanting to return

NOTE: This deferment is for one semester only. You must re-enroll at the university in the fall or winter semester immediately following your absence. For example, if you do not attend winter semester then you must re-enroll fall semester of the same year. If you do not attend fall semester then you must re-enroll winter semester of the following year.

Students who plan to interrupt their studies for more than one semester will need to reapply as a Former Student.

If you have registered for classes and then decide to defer, it is your responsibility to drop these courses before the first day of the semester or term to which you have enrolled. If you fail to drop your courses, you will be charged tuition according to the discontinuance guidelines listed in the current class schedule bulletin. If you have questions on how to withdraw, consult your class schedule or call the Registration Office at 801-422-2824. If you submit your deferment after school has begun, you also need to see the Discontinuance Office at B-150 ASB or 801-422-7705. You will be charged tuition for every day you are enrolled in classes.

International Continuing Student Deferment

The guidelines above for Continuing Students apply to International Students with one exception: international students must be a daytime student during an eight -month period immediately prior to requesting the deferment. Please contact International Services (801-422-2695) to make sure you have met all requirements for deferment.
