On-campus employment

<<back

Over 11,500 BYU students help pay for the college each year with part-time, on-campus employment. Advantages include:

  • Income—Average pay is $7.50 to $8.00 per hour, but ranges from $7.05 to over $17. A student working 20 hours per week at $8.00 per hour can gross $620 per month.
  • Keep more money—Students enrolled at least half-time do not pay FICA tax, so they keep more of what they earn.
  • Convenience—You don’t have to leave campus. Being near your classes reduces time and money wasted traveling between school and work.
  • Flexibility—Many campus jobs provide flexibility for school demands.

Most student employment involves 15-20 hours per week, but may be as low as 10, depending on the job.

Beware of thinking “I need a car so I can get a higher paying job off-campus.” By the time you pay the car payment, insurance, gas and upkeep, most students have less money than if they had a campus job and no car.
