Non-BYU Scholarships

The Financial Aid and Scholarship Office does not have applications for non-BYU scholarships.  You may wish to talk to your high school counselor, college advisement center, or ask the general reference section of your library to find scholarship opportunities.  However, we are happy to accept your scholarship once you have been awarded.

Address: If you have a scholarship from another organization that you would like to use at BYU, send it to

BYU Financial Aid and Scholarship Office
A-41 ASB
Provo UT  84602

Please make sure your name and BYU ID number are referenced on the check. Scholarships may also be delivered in person to One Stop in the D wing of the ASB. If the check is made payable to you and BYU, please endorse the check.

Please note: Effective Fall 2006, BYU will no longer invoice other institutions.  In practical terms, this means you will not receive your scholarship money until BYU actually receives it—your institution must send a check, not just a voucher form.  We are happy to inform awarding institutions of tuition costs.  This primarily affects vocational rehabilitation and military scholarships.  If you have any questions, please call our office at (801) 422-4104.

The Process: Non-BYU scholarships will automatically be credited to your student account and will appear under “scholarships” on your tuition billing statement as soon as we have processed your award (usually 2-4 business days).  Scholarships will go towards tuition, medical insurance, and required class fees first.  If this is already covered (through other scholarships, financial aid, or payments you make), you may:

  1. Sign up for direct deposit (click “authorize direct deposit” at the bottom of your tuition billing statement) to have extra funds deposited directly to your bank account.
  2. If you have not authorized direct deposit, pick up your check in person at One Stop Services in the WSC during the beginning of each semester. After One Stop, checks cannot be picked up person and will be mailed to the mailing address you listed on Route Y.
  3. Contact Financial Services at (801) 422-4104 to request that the money be moved to another area (i.e. housing).  Be aware that deadlines and timing are important—if the university has already printed you a check or deposited the funds to your bank account, this is not an option for you. Additionally, this option is not available until the money has posted to your account (the beginning of the semester). Fall scholarships may not be used to make housing payments due during the summer.

Please note that direct deposit or checks are not available until classes have started.  If your scholarship will not arrive at BYU before the tuition deadline, you may want to pay your own tuition and be reimbursed by your scholarship when it arrives.  (For fall and winter semester, the tuition deadline is two weeks after the first day of class.)  The Financial Aid Office can help you with short-term loans; contact them at (801) 422-4104.

In most cases, non-BYU scholarships will not change the amount of scholarships and financial aid you receive from BYU.  A few exceptions may include students who are receiving Stafford Loans or athletes under NCAA regulations.  If you know your scholarship has been received by BYU, but it does not appear on your student account, contact the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office at (801) 422-4104.

Independent study: You are welcome to use your non-BYU scholarship for Independent Study courses if you have approval from your donor.  To transfer funds to Independent Study, we must have a written statement of approval from your donor and a letter from you listing the courses you wish to take. Please note: we can only accept the amount for your course(s) and materials. Any funds that are in excess of your course(s) and materials will be returned to your donor.

Military tuition assistance: Contact your unit for a “Request for Tuition Assistance” form.  Once the forms are completed, submit them to our office.  If you change your registration at any point during the semester, you will need to submit a corrected tuition assistance form from your unit.

Vocational rehabilitation: Your rehabilitation counselor should mail or fax us an authorization to pay your tuition and any other charges they cover.  If your textbooks are covered, your counselor must send a separate authorization to the Bookstore Customer Accounts Office, 3978 WSC.  They can be reached at (801) 422-2470.
