Q: What do I need to do to apply for Graduation?
A: Visit the How to Apply for Graduation page.

Q: Can I postpone my graduation after applying?
A: Each college has its own policy about changing or postponing graduation. Contact your College Advisement Center.

Q: How do I find out where my Advisement Center is located?
A: Go to the Advisement Centers page

Q: What if I miss the application deadline for the semester in which I plan to graduate?
A: Contact your advisement center.

Q: If I don't graduate during the semester I applied for, do I have to reapply?
A: No, but you will need to let your advisement center know what your plans are.

Q: What if I get married and my name changes after I apply for graduation? Can I change my name on my diploma? How?
A: Yes, Just contact Graduation Services at B-150 in the ASB.

Q: My spouse and I are both graduating but in different colleges. How can we both attend one convocation program?
A: You will need to contact your advisement center.

Q: Can I get a letter from the university stating that I will graduate at a certain time so I can get a job before I actually graduate?
A: You will need to contact your advisement center.

Q: Can I walk before I graduate?
A: Each college has its own policy about allowing a student to "walk" at convocation. Contact your College Advisement Center.

Q: Do I need tickets for my family and friends to attend commencement or convocation?
A: Tickets are not required.

Q: Where and when do I line up for commencement?
A: For commencement processional, you should aim for 3 p.m. in the parking lots north of the ASB. The academic procession begins promptly at 3:15 p.m. If it should rain and it is too wet to line up outside, you should be in your designated seating area inside the Marriott Center by 3:45 p.m. Visit the Academic Procession page for more information.

Q: Are signing services available for commencement?
A: Signing services are provided at the Marriott Center for guests off the concourse level walk-in between Portals H and J on the television platform area. Lip reading would have to be done from the large video screens.

Q: Who do I contact if I have special needs for commencement?
A: Special Needs – contact Special Events Office at the Marriott Center (422-6022). ALL AVAILABILITY IS ON A FIRST COME BASIS. Wheelchair seating is in Portal F and Portal K (includes space for one wheelchair and one guest). Mobility impaired is the top row of the concourse (with usher help) portal C through O.

Q: Where is my Convocation?

Q: Where can my family stay when they come to my Commencement?

Q: Where can we park for Commencement and Convocation exercises?
A: See the parking page for the best parking near each event.

Q: What clearance do I have to get in order to make sure I am on line to graduate?
A: Contact your advisement center.

Q: When and how can I find out about the Senior Celebration?
A: Student Leadership (422-6009) is in charge of the Senior Celebration. The Celebration usually takes place in the Wilkinson Center. There will be games, food, etc.

Q: How and when do I order and pick up my cap and gown?
A: Go to the Caps/Gowns & Alumni Services page.

Q: When will I get my diploma?
A: Three to eight weeks after graduation.

Q: What information is on my Diploma?
A: On the undergraduate diploma:

  • The university's name
  • The university seal
  • Your name as it was given to the university on your graduation application
  • The degree awarded
  • Your major (for students who graduated beginning December 2008. Students who graduate with a second major only receive one degree and one diploma. Only the primary major will be listed in the university commencement program and on the diploma.)
  • Any honors and distinctions
  • The date your degree was awarded
  • Signatures of the chairman of the Board of Trustees and of the president of the university

On the graduate diploma:
  • The university's name
  • The university seal
  • Your name as it was given to the university
  • The degree awarded
  • Your major
  • The date your degree was awarded
  • Signatures of the chairman of the Board of Trustees and of the president of the university

Q: How do I know if I qualify for Scholastic or University Honors?
A: Go to the Honors page.

Q: Which side does the tassel go on?
A: All candidates should position their tassels on the left side of the academic caps.

Q: What color of tassel should I get?
A: Go to the Caps/Gowns & Alumni Services page.

Q: If I don't go to my Commencement exercises, how can I get a Commencement Program?
A: Contact your advisement center.

Q: Where can I find out about internships and jobs after graduation?
A: Contact Career Placement Services at 2410 WSC or call (801) 422-3000.

Q: What does it mean to be an alumnus/alumna?
A: Visit the Alumni Web Page.

Q: What is the Cougar Club?

Q: How do I stay in touch with the university?

Q: What if I have a question about my records after I have graduated? Who do I call?

Q: How do I get a duplicate diploma?

Q: How do I get a transcript?
A: Contact Records/Registration (801) 422-2631.

Q: Can I get a minor after I graduate?
A: No. BYU has a policy that a student may only get one undergraduate degree from BYU and minors cannot be added on after graduation.

Q: When will my final grades be reflected on my transcript?
A: After grade processing, which usually occurs about a week after graduation.

Q: What if I fail a required class my last semester?
A: You will need to contact your advisement center to make a plan to satisfy the requirement.

Q: Where does my diploma get mailed to?
A: To the mailing address listed in Route Y.
