It is our desire to help you prepare to leave the University in a manner that will allow the easiest possible transition back to BYU. The following are some points to consider:

  • Prepare to return by gathering information in one location.
  • Designate an individual to assist you in academic matters while you are away. Your designee may be a sibling, parent, or anyone who is willing to assist. Make sure they understand what needs to happen.
  • Make sure the person assisting you is aware of dates and deadlines.

FAQ’s

What does “defer” mean?

Deferment means to postpone your eligibility to register for classes.

How do I defer?

To defer enrollment and scholarship (if applicable) without reapplying, the following conditions should be met:

  • Be admitted as a regular day school, degree seeking student at Brigham Young University;
  • If you are a current BYU student, enter the Missionary Training Center (MTC) before the end of next semester (fall or winter) following your last day of school enrollment. If you are deferring admission before attending BYU day school, you should enter the MTC during the semester to which you have been admitted;
  • Do not attend or enroll at any college or university between leaving and returning to BYU;
  • Must not be on academic suspension nor dismissal from BYU;
  • Complete a full mission and receive an ecclesiastical endorsement from your mission president. Failure to complete the mission, for any reason (medical, etc.), will void the deferment form and require a re-application to BYU.

Following your mission, you must enroll at Brigham Young University within a given time period. The following shows when you must enroll:

Return from Mission: Enroll No Later Than:
October-April Fall Semester
May-September Winter Semester

If you are registered for a future semester or term, but will be unable to attend due to your mission, you are responsible for discontinuing from the courses prior to leaving the university.

The missionary deferment form should be submitted to the BYU Admissions Office after receiving your mission call and before entering the Missionary Training Center. Fill out the “LDS Missionary Enrollment and Scholarship Deferment Application” form in the Missionary Packet or Download Deferment Form here.

International Student Missionary Deferment
The guidelines above apply to International Students. Proof of financial support is required.

Can I defer a semester and then defer for my mission without attending in between?

No, you cannot have back-to-back deferments without attending the university between deferments.

When do I need to defer?

It is best to defer as soon as you get your call.

What if I want to attend a different semester than I originally planned?

You must attend the semester or term in which you indicated you would be returning. If you need to change your anticipated return to school, you will need to contact the Admissions Office (801-422-2507) to change your deferment date.  Failure to do so will result in a loss of eligibility and dropped classes for all subsequent semesters.  Reapplication to the university would be necessary,

How does my designee get into the system to register?

The registration page is accessed through the Route Y system.  The designee simply enters your Net ID and password on the homepage (www.byu.edu).  Once they have logged on; they type MyMAP in the white Quick URL box on the upper right side of the screen.  When this page loads, select the Register tab which will allow them to view the classes planned by you. They may also register for classes by clicking on the Add Classes button at the bottom of the appropriate semester/term.

What if my designee forgets my Net ID and password?

If you have ever enrolled at BYU your records are protected by federal privacy laws.  Therefore, we can only reset the password for another individual in one of the following ways:

  • If your parents prove they claimed you as a dependent by sending in to us a copy of their tax form.  (Financial information may be blacked out on the tax form.) To request a password reset, your designee will need to send to us your full name, BYU ID or SS number and birth date, a request to reset the password, the tax form and a contact name and phone number.  Please send this to the Registration Office, B-130 ASB, Provo, UT 84602 or fax it to (801) 422-0615. When we receive the request, we will call with the password information.
  • If you were not claimed by your parents on the year’s most recent tax form, we can accept a signed letter from you requesting the designee’s help with registration. The same information noted above would need to be included (send a copy of the signed letter rather than the tax form) with the request.
  • You may turn in the Missionary Student Information Release Form to the Registration Office, (B-130 ASB) before you leave.  This form grants your designee access to your records so your designee can register for you.

Is it important for my designee to know my email address at BYU?

Registration notices are sent out for fall and winter semesters through email indicating the priority registration day for each student based on the number of credit hours completed.  Your designee should watch for the notices to appear through email or on the registration page approximately the middle of March (for fall) and the end of September (for winter).  There are no priority registration dates for spring/summer terms.  Registration for these terms begins the first of February.

How will my designee know when it is time for me to register?

You need to make sure your email is correct so when the priority registration dates are assigned and the email is sent out, your designee will be able to access it.  Another way for them to know when your priority registration date is scheduled would be to select the Register tab on MyMAP for the appropriate semester.  For spring/summer terms there are no priority dates assigned; registration for both terms for all students begins the first of February.

What classes should my designee register for?

It would be a good idea to leave a list of classes you would like to take so the person registering for you can have some idea of what courses to register for.  Planning and organizing classes on the MyMAP system before you go is another way to make it much easier for others to register for you.  Simply select the courses you would like to take when you return to the university and assign the semester or term in which you would like to take them in the organize portion of MyMAP.  When it comes to registering for the classes, your designee simply needs to click “Add” on each class and select the section that works best with your schedule. (The class schedule and catalog are online so you or your designee may refer to it in selecting classes.)

Can my designee take care of the holds on my record?

It is best to make sure there are no holds on your record to prevent your registration before you leave. If you were on academic warning or probation your last semester at BYU, you will have a hold that prevents registration.  You will need to work with the Academic Support Office (801-422-2723) to have this hold removed.  There are other holds that also will prevent registration. We STRONGLY suggest that you take care of this prior to leaving campus. Registration will not be available until all holds are cleared.

What if I attend another college or university before returning to BYU?

If you do attend another university or college before returning to BYU, you will need to reapply.

When is tuition due?

Tuition is due seven days before the first day of school.  Failure to pay tuition by that date will result in an inability to add classes to your schedule unless there is financial aid pending.  Failure to pay tuition by the day after the add/drop deadline will result in all classes being dropped from your schedule.
