Please visit the following link and review the listed criteria to see if you are eligible to defer. International students need to read any additional instructions for them, and must speak with the International Student Services Office before leaving BYU.

Yes. A leave of absence may be taken directly prior to a missionary deferment (consecutive semester), as long as the semester you are absent is not the first enrollment you have been admitted to (see New Admitted section above). Following your mission, you must enroll at Brigham Young University within a given time period, as noted in the online missionary deferment criteria.
When do I need to defer?
It is best to defer as soon as you get your call, and it is required that you submit your deferment before entering the MTC.
You must attend the semester or term to which you are admitted. Failure to do so will result in a loss of eligibility and dropped classes for all subsequent semesters. Reapplication to the university would be necessary. If you need to change your anticipated return to school, you will need to contact the Admissions Office (801-422-2507) for instructions. The processing times of approved changes may vary and therefore requests should be made as early as possible to prevent delays in registration.
If you have ever enrolled at BYU your records are protected by federal privacy laws. Therefore, we can only give access to another individual in one of the following ways:
- You may turn in the Missionary Student Information Release Form to the Records & Registration Office, (B-150 ASB). This form grants your designee access to your records so your designee can register for you. It is best to complete this form before you leave.
- You can provide your written consent. This written consent must:
- Specify the records to be released
- State the purpose of the disclosure
- Identify the party or class of parties to whom the disclosure may be made
- Be signed and dated by the student
Yes, if you wish for them to review your BYU emails while you are away. As part of the online deferment, you can update your email address to where you wish for university communications to be sent.
You need to make sure your email is correct. Registration notices are sent out for fall and winter semesters through email indicating the priority registration day for each student based on the number of credit hours completed. Your designee should watch for the notices to appear through email or on the registration page approximately the middle of March (for fall) and the end of September (for winter). This date is also displayed on the “Register” tap on MyMAP under the appropriate semester. There are no priority registration dates for spring/summer terms. Registration for these terms begins February 1st.
It would be a good idea to leave a list of classes you would like to take so the person registering for you can have some idea of what courses to register for. Planning and organizing classes on the MyMAP system before you go is another way to make it much easier for others to register for you. Simply select the courses you would like to take when you return to the university and assign the semester or term in which you would like to take them in the organize portion of MyMAP. When it comes to registering for the classes, your designee simply needs to click “Add” on each class and select the section that works best with your schedule. (The class schedule and catalog are online so you or your designee may refer to it in selecting classes.)
It is best to make sure there are no holds on your record to prevent your registration before you leave. If you were on academic warning or probation your last semester at BYU, you will have a hold that prevents registration. You will need to work with the Academic Support Office (801-422-2723) to have this hold removed. There are other holds that also will prevent registration. We STRONGLY suggest that you take care of this prior to leaving campus. Registration will not be available until all holds are cleared.
If you do attend another university or college before returning to BYU, you will need to reapply. Applications for former students can be submitted through the CES Admissions website www.BeSmart.com.
Tuition is due seven days before the first day of school. Failure to pay tuition by that date will result in an inability to add classes to your schedule unless there is financial aid pending. Failure to pay tuition by the day after the add/drop deadline will result in all classes being dropped from your schedule. Please refer to tuition.byu.edu for additional information on tuition charges and deadlines.
