Beginning spring and summer 2012 BYU will be offering students the option of "waitlisting." Waitlists allow a student to place themself in a queue for a class that is full. It delivers "first come first serve" registration, provided the student meets all class limitation requirements and doesn't have any registration holds. When a seat opens up in a class, the first person on the waitlist will be added automatically.
If a student is not eligible to add a particular class based on class limitations, they will not see the waitlist option in MyMAP.
If a class is full and the student is eligible to take that class, a "WL" will appear next to the class. Students can click on the "WL" to be added to the Waitlist. They are notified at that time what approximate position in the queue they will be.
Students must be aware of and agree to the following terms in order to be added to a waitlist.
If you are added to a waitlisted class, a confirmation email will be sent.
How does a student get on a class waitlist?
If a class is full, and a student would be eligible to register for the class if seats were available, and the class is accepting students to the waitlist, there will be a “WL” by the class. The student clicks on the “WL.” An agreement will pop up and the student must agree to the terms. Once that occurs, they will be added to the waitlist.
How can a student know their current position in the waitlist?
When a student is added to the waitlist, they are told their approximate position in the queue. On MyMAP there is a Waitlist tab that shows the classes that they have waitlisted and their current position in the queue. When a student is added to a class from the waitlist queue they are notified via email.
How does a student remove themself from the waitlist?
On MyMAP there is a tab with the student’s current waitlist. There is a “remove” link by each class. Anytime a student wants to remove themselves from a waitlist, they click on that “remove” link.
Can a student waitlist an envelope of classes?
No, waitlisting only works on individual classes.
Does waitlisting work for all classes?
Waitlisting will work on all classes with “F” or “O” registration method, unless the department has turned off this feature. (“S” registration method classes always require a Permission-to-add code so waitlisting does not function for those classes.)
When and why would a waitlist expire?
All waitlists will be purged and no longer function after the 4th calendar day of a semester or term. Additionally, if the department changes the
registration method to “S” it will purge any waitlists at that time.
Can I waitlist a cross-listed class?
Yes. As soon as a seat opens, if you are first in the waitlist, you will be registered in the class with the title code you waitlisted under.
If the waitlist is long will another section of the class be added or more seats opened?
Departments and faculty will be able to see the waitlist for their classes. If they determine they have resources to provide another section, that would be their prerogative. If so, they would need to make students aware of the new section. The waitlist would not register students into a new section, only the section the students waitlist for.
What if I forget to remove myself from a waitlist that I don’t want any more?
You might get added to the class if a seat opens up and you are first in the waitlist. Once you know you no longer want a waitlisted class, you MUST remove yourself from the list. You can always see the list of classes you have waitlisted on MyMAP.
Can I waitlist more than one section of a non “R” suffix course?
No. If it is not an “R” suffix course, you can ONLY waitlist for one section. If you are registered for one section of the course, you may waitlist for one other section. If you are registered from the waitlist for the waitlisted section, the other section will be dropped since you can only register for one section of non “R” suffix courses.
Can I waitlist more than one section of an “R” suffix course?
Yes because you can register for multiple sections of “R” suffix courses. If you are added to the waitlisted “R” course, it will not impact your registration of other sections of the “R “course.
Is there a way for someone to be moved up in the waitlist?
Waitlists are first come, first served. Faculty or staff cannot change the order of a waitlist. Students may remove themselves from a waitlist at any time.
Is there a way to override the waitlist?
Permission-to-add codes allow a student to register, even if a class is full, waitlist will only register someone if there is a seat available.
Do waitlists function until the add/drop deadline?
No, all waitlists will be purged and no longer function after the 4th calendar day of a semester or term.
Why am I not being added to the class if I am at the top of the waitlist?
You maintain your spot in the waitlist but will be skipped for any of the following reasons:
1. You have a registration hold
2. Adding the class would put you over the maximum credit hour limit (18.0 F/W, 9.0 Sp/Sum undergrad)
3. You do not meet the specific class limitations (e.g. majors only, etc.)
4. You are not eligible to register
